Cambridge, UK, 2011

Trip

I took the train from London to Cambridge. Railway transportation is very famous throughout the UK and for a good reason - the trains are fast and reliable.

Accommodation

I stayed there at the Holliday Inn yet I took no pictures from the hotel. Nothing special to mention about that place, apart from the general observation on hotels in the UK - most of them do indeed possess the air of old and well established businesses but this goes hand in hand with the fact that they really are old. And old sometimes means having that particular smell of my grandmother's closet on the second floor of the 100 years old village house.

Perfectly clean though, and as all other accommodation places in the kingdom, they do offer this welcome pack to all guests with the instant coffee and tea coupled with a biscuit or two. I know it's not unique to the UK but I love it. Breakfast is charming, wide choice of continental food and typical English breakfast.

Strictly non-smoking environment across all accommodation places in the country.

Is water drinkable?

Yes, it is. Bottled water is also available everywhere.

Is it safe?

Absolutely.

Cash or CC?

To be honest, I can not be certain on that. CC are widely accepted across UK yet being a smaller place I would recommend you still bring some cash with you.

General impressions

Cambridge is not a big city. It's an academic centre, competing with Oxford on popularity. If I am to compare the two, Cambridge does offer plenty of contemporary elements in its architecture, unlike Oxford. It does not mean that Cambridge is full of modern glass and iron buildings - no, there are fantastic architectural wonders of old college and university buildings, it's just that you do have contemporary residential areas as well.

Weather

Typical English weather :-)

Umbrella is a must across the whole of UK, people enjoy the not so common occasions when it is sunny and not windy.

Canals are one of the best features of Cambridge. Turned into a touristic attraction, you can spend some pounds on a boat trip that would last about 20 - 30 minutes but would give you a great tour to feel the air of the city.

Vaccines?

None that would be required, yet please follow the disclaimer that it depends on where you come from and you must seek professional advice from a qualified professional.
